  • Sierra and Decagon are the strongest picks for large brands that want a custom agent with deep testing and QA, but neither publishes pricing.

  • Zendesk AI Agents and Salesforce Agentforce make the most sense if you already run Zendesk or Service Cloud.

  • Lorikeet is built for regulated industries like fintech and health, and Gorgias is the simplest choice for Shopify stores.

What changed in AI support agents this year

Support leaders are being pushed to move fast. In a Gartner survey published in February 2026, 91% of customer service leaders said they were under executive pressure to implement AI this year, and Gartner predicts that AI agents will resolve 80% of common service issues on their own by 2029. Gartner also expects half of the companies that cut service staff because of AI to rehire by 2027, which is a fair warning about buying on the demo.

The market also consolidated. Intercom renamed itself Fin in May 2026, and Salesforce closed its acquisition of Fin in September, so Fin and Agentforce now have the same owner. Zendesk bought Forethought in March 2026, and NICE completed its purchase of Cognigy in September 2025. Meanwhile the newer independents, Sierra and Decagon, raised large rounds and signed some of the biggest consumer brands.

How we ranked: We looked at which channels each agent handles, whether it can take real actions like refunds and order changes, how much it depends on one helpdesk, what it offers for testing and QA before and after launch, how transparent its pricing is, and the public evidence behind its resolution claims. Resolution rates below are the vendors' own figures. We did not run a hands-on bake-off for this edition.

1. Fin

Fin, the AI agent formerly sold under the Intercom name, is the easiest strong agent to put in front of customers without changing your helpdesk.

What works: Fin answers across chat, email, voice, WhatsApp, SMS and social, and it runs inside Intercom or on top of Zendesk, Salesforce, HubSpot and Freshdesk. It can take actions through your APIs or data connectors, such as issuing refunds or updating accounts, and Procedures let you script multi-step flows. A testing suite runs simulations and regression tests before changes go live. Fin says it resolves 76% of conversations on average across its customers.

What doesn't: Real-world resolution depends heavily on the quality of your help content; a 60-day test by Builts AI, an automation agency that builds custom alternatives, measured 38% across four small-business clients. With Salesforce now owning Fin, buyers outside the Salesforce world will want to watch where the roadmap goes.

Best for: Support teams of any size that want a capable agent on their current helpdesk. Fin costs $0.99 per outcome for chat and email, which covers resolutions and handoffs to your team, as of October 2026.

2. Sierra

Sierra builds custom agents for large consumer brands, and its customer list is the strongest in the category.

What works: Sierra agents work across chat, SMS, WhatsApp, email and voice. Agent Studio is where teams build and change the agent, Experiments runs A/B tests on its behavior, and Monitors and observability tools watch live conversations. Customers include ADT, SiriusXM, Wayfair, Vanguard and DIRECTV, and the company raised $950 million in May 2026.

What doesn't: There's no self-serve option and no public pricing, and it's priced for enterprise budgets. Sierra doesn't publish a platform-wide resolution rate.

Best for: Large brands with high contact volume across every channel. Pricing is outcome-based and isn't public, as of October 2026.

3. Decagon

Decagon is the pick for operations-minded teams that want to control and test exactly how the agent behaves.

What works: Agent Operating Procedures let support teams write workflows in plain language, and Decagon pairs them with simulation testing, A/B experiments and Watchtower, which reviews live conversations continuously. It covers voice, chat and email. Decagon's published customer results include Chime at 70% resolution across chat and voice and Duolingo at 80% deflection.

What doesn't: Pricing isn't public, and on the default per-conversation model you pay even when the agent hands off without resolving.

Best for: Mid-size and enterprise teams that want to own their agent's procedures and QA. Pricing isn't public, as of October 2026.

4. Zendesk AI Agents

Zendesk AI Agents are the natural choice for teams already on Zendesk, and now an option for some who aren't.

What works: The agents work across web, mobile, social, email and voice, and built-in QA reviews every interaction. With the Forethought acquisition, Zendesk also sells Forethought AI Agents that run on other helpdesks. Zendesk cites customer results such as TeamSystem at 80% and Hello Sugar at 66%.

What doesn't: Plans bundle only a handful of automated resolutions per agent seat, so costs climb at volume, and the Forethought integration is only months old.

Best for: Teams that want the agent and the helpdesk from one vendor. Suite Team is $55 per agent a month billed annually, with extra automated resolutions from $1.50 each, as of October 2026.

5. Salesforce Agentforce for Service

Agentforce for Service makes sense when your customer data and service workflows already live in Salesforce.

What works: Agentforce agents act directly on Service Cloud records and workflows, and Agentforce Contact Center added native voice in 2026 for US and Canadian customers. Salesforce says its agent handles about 70% of the inquiries on its own help site.

What doesn't: It effectively requires Service Cloud, implementation is a real project, and the pricing has several layers to model.

Best for: Service Cloud customers with in-house Salesforce admins. Pricing is $2 per conversation or Flex Credits at $0.10 per action, as of October 2026.

6. Lorikeet

Lorikeet is built for companies in fintech, health and insurance, where a wrong answer costs more than a slow one.

What works: It handles chat, email, voice, SMS and WhatsApp, acts through your own APIs, and sits inside Zendesk, Intercom, Salesforce or HubSpot with no migration. Simulations, automatic QA on every conversation and runtime guardrails are included, and Lorikeet's team helps with setup. Its pricing is among the most transparent in the category, with published rates for each channel, and there's a 30-day free trial.

What doesn't: The monthly platform fee is steep for low volumes, and it's a smaller vendor than the others here.

Best for: Regulated companies that need careful, auditable automation. Start is $2,100 a month plus $0.99 per chat or email resolution, as of October 2026.

7. Ada

Ada is a long-standing AI agent vendor with a growing voice business.

What works: Ada covers voice, messaging and email. It launched a unified reasoning engine in February 2026, and in March it reported 12x growth in voice revenue. Its published customer results include Dott, which went from 32% to 77% automated resolution.

What doesn't: Pricing comes only through a sales call, and Ada has raised far less recent funding than Sierra or Decagon.

Best for: Mid-market and enterprise teams that need voice and chat in many languages. Pricing isn't public, as of October 2026.

8. Gorgias AI Agent

Gorgias is the simplest way for a Shopify store to automate order questions.

What works: The AI Agent handles order tracking, returns and other Shopify actions across chat, email and SMS, and a Shopping Assistant answers product questions before purchase. Setup is quick for stores already on Gorgias.

What doesn't: It's built for ecommerce, mainly Shopify, it needs the Gorgias helpdesk, and the AI Agent doesn't take phone calls.

Best for: Shopify brands with a small support team. AI Agent interactions cost $0.90 each on annual billing, as of October 2026.

Didn't make the cut

Parloa is a strong voice-first agent used by Booking.com and Decathlon, but its chat and messaging are secondary to voice.

NICE Cognigy is a powerful enterprise platform with a new simulator for testing agents, but it takes real build work and suits contact centers already on NICE.

Crescendo pitches replacing the whole support operation, including human agents, which is a different purchase from the tools here.

Kustomer, Freshworks and HubSpot all have capable AI agents, but each works best inside its own helpdesk.

How to choose an AI customer support agent

Start with your helpdesk. If you're happy with it, pick an agent that runs on top of it, like Fin, Lorikeet or Forethought. If you're on Zendesk or Service Cloud, the native agent saves integration work.

Test on your own tickets. Vendor resolution rates are self-reported and often come from mature deployments. Ask to run the agent against a few hundred of your real past conversations before you sign.

Check what it can change. Most of the value is in refunds, order changes and account updates. Ask which systems it can write to and how those actions are approved and logged.

Model the price at your volume. Per-resolution, per-conversation and per-action pricing can land in very different places. Price each option on last quarter's contact volume, and ask what counts as a resolution.

Frequently asked questions

What's the best AI customer support agent in 2026?

Fin is the best AI customer support agent for most teams in 2026, because it runs on top of most major helpdesks, covers chat, email and voice, and publishes a per-resolution price. Sierra and Decagon are better fits for large brands that want a custom agent with deep testing.

How much do AI support agents cost?

Most charge per resolution or per conversation. Fin is $0.99 per outcome, Salesforce Agentforce is $2 per conversation, and Lorikeet charges a monthly platform fee plus $0.99 per resolution, as of October 2026. Sierra, Decagon and Ada don't publish prices.

What resolution rate should I expect?

Expect less than the headline. Vendors quote 70% to 80%, often from mature deployments, but results depend on your help content and how many actions the agent can take; one agency's 60-day test of Fin across four small businesses measured 38%.

Do I need to switch helpdesks to use an AI agent?

No. Fin, Lorikeet and Forethought run on top of helpdesks like Zendesk, Salesforce and HubSpot. Zendesk AI Agents, Agentforce and Gorgias work best inside their own platforms.

Can AI agents handle phone calls?

Yes. Fin, Sierra, Decagon, Zendesk, Agentforce, Lorikeet and Ada all handle voice, and Parloa specializes in it. Gorgias's AI Agent does not take calls.
